Suggest go to RS (take it apart and take unit with you) and check if c-cells are same size, batts seem to be same size, I dont have any handy to check. Try to get batts with solder tabs. Watch plus and minus when making pack. Will check back in a couple days and see how you did. I tried replacing the battery in consulttion with a surly clerk at a batteries+ store and $18 later it didn't work. I'm going to still try since the charger works. I think it's just a matter of finding the right rechargeable. I've not been able to find a rechargeable that is at all close to this great model.
