The high-voltage batteries necessary to power this lantern are for an outdated technology. It's like trying to find the B+ batteries for a portable tube radio. You could buy a nice rechargeable flourescent for the price of the disposable batteries. I gave up on my Safari Light 30 years ago and bought a new flourescent that runs on a 6 volt lantern battery that sells for a few dollars.

I have the Eveready version of this lantern and after an exhausting search for affordable battery power came up empty.........so I went to local walmart and purchased portable inverter($18.95 in automotive) and wired it direct to existing outlet on lantern. This inverter was small enough to mount under the outlet compartment. I now use my Black&decker 18volt rechargable from my drill/driver ....or you can use any brand of 12-18volt rechargable that fits in the battery compartment. I even have used a 8 D-cell power pack from radioshack ($2.69)....but the life is only a few houres and d-cells arnt cheep either. Hopes this helps all those who have these great lil lanterns.Any questions? cheetahd2000@yahoo.com

Found one of these wonderful lanterns at our local Salvation Army and bought it on the spot. Came to this site for the same reason everyone else has: Where do you get batteries for this thing? Now that I know they are such an oddball type and pretty much unavailable, I guess I'll just use it as a 115v portable light. To judge from the era when this lantern was produced (didn't think it dated to the early '60s!), the engineers evidently chose to use what are known as "B" batteries, which were used in "portable" electronics that actually used vacuum tubes--yes, there really used to be such stuff before transistors--like suitcase-sized radios and lunchbox-sized hearing aids. As for the 115v cord, it is nothing more than a standard "cheater cord" which any good electronic supply house *may* still carry (Radio Shack used to). Ask for a "non-polarized" type, as opposed to the polarized version which has different-sized socket holes and plug blades so that it can be connected only one way--that type won't work here. Incidently, Rival used to use this same type of cord on some of their crockpots. These were models that were designed to double as servers: the cord was detachable so the whole pot could be brought to the dinner table. So if you have one of these pots, the cord will fit your Safari Lite!
As for the battery issue, it seems the people at Gould don't appear to have a clue just how popular these lanterns were/are. If I had my druthers, I'd like to see them make a module which would slide into the battery compartment of the Safari Lite. It could hold eight to ten D-sized NiMH rechargeable cells and would have a built-in DC-to-DC converter circuit to change the ~12 volts from the cells to the requisite high voltage produced by the original batteries. It would be a simple matter to add a charger circuit and power jack (to allow charging by plugging the module into a "wall wart"-type power pack, like those used with rechargeable power tool batteries.
Are you listening, Gould?

Hi, I recently purchased some military batteries and in the lot were 3 odd-ball (to me) ones. The military stock number is 6135-00-334-4500 and battery number is BAI-A646. Those numbers reference a "Burgess Safari Light". I opened two of the batteries and these say "Premium Battery for Burgess Flourescent Lanterns". With a Burgess Part # Z46HD. One of the batteries tested 44 volts and the other tested 60 volts. One is still sealed. There is some swelling. If anybody is interested they are $10.00 each plus Priority Mail shipping. With your zip I can quote. Thanks, Kirk

This is a discontinued battery through Interstate All Battery Center...I am an employee.
dave on Oct 18, 2007 - 2:12 PM
The 67.5 volt battery "may" fire the lantern , but , the cells inside of that battery is much smaller and of less capacity than the cells used in the original; 69v Burgess Battery unit , and will not have much run time ..
We are about ready to launch a New Safari Lite using LED lighting and a rechargeable battery .
The old Batteries , the Z46 "Towers of Power" are not production ... The last units we manufactured were made during the Gulf War I ....they were carbon zinc wafer cell batteries ...the machinery these were made on were very dated and hard to keep running properly ... for a short time we had alkaline replacements for this lantern , but , they were selling for 72.00 pair ...
We may offer the alkaline direct replacements next year , depending on cost and demand ... we hope our "New" Safari will replace all of the plder units ...
Thank You !

"A STARTLING AND DRAMATIC BREAKTHROUGH IN PORTABLE LIGHTING".
Got one this weekend - Mint in stryofoam box with manual and AC cord. There were two dead Eveready No. 646 NEDA 914D 69 volt battery cells inside. This one made by Clevite Burgess of Freeport Illinois (which came first Clevitte or Gould?). Like the photographer says, it puts out great light on AC.
No wonder there are so many around - they don't get beat up around the campsite!

I found a company that could make the Burgess 69 volt No. Z46HD type fluorescent lantern battery, but the volume needs to be up to reduce the costs or else it is $100/battery in quantities that are low. If anybody wants to pool our resources together, then we can reduce the manuf. costs.
Any takers?

I also need batteries but they appear to have been discontinued by all. My old ones are Ray-O-Vac model 914D. I called Ray-O-Vac and was told they no longer make this battery but did offer to replace the light with an equivalent. Considering how much the light weighs with the batteries in it, I think I will be better off just buying a new light rather than shipping it to them. The batteries I have were purchased from K-Mart a long time ago and the tag says $9.44!

Huge primary batteries of around 500 volts were used to run ancient strobonar flashguns too. Exorbitant cost and short shelf life now make them ridiculously impractical. A small inverter and a 12 volt NiMH pack or SLA battery that will fit inside the lantern's case could run the light from the AC input at far less cost than a couple sets of primary batteries.

I just acquired one of these. Works fine on AC power. Could not find the batteries. Looks like my winter time project will be to build a DC-DC converter to get 138 volts (the two batteries are in series) to run it off of standard cells.

Does anyone know if these are 69 volt or is that just a battery number? If just a number what voltage are the batteries? Ikeepit2@aol.com
