ALTHOUGH I LOVE THESE OLDER LANTERNS..GOTTA ADMIT...LEDS ARE TAKIN OVER AN ARE THE NEXT BIG THING IN LANTERNS...NOT ONLY ARE THEY BRIGHTER NOW THAN FLUORESCENT TUBES BUT GO MUCH FURTHER ON BATTERIES..FLOURESCENT TUBES TAKE A TON OF BATTERY POWER TO OPERATE...PLUS...LEDS NEVER WEAR OUT OR BURN OUT...BUT THESE OLDER LANTERNS WERE GREAT IN THEIR DAY...

My wife and I just found one of these (new) at a garage sale yesterday! What a jem of a lantern, works perfect, and the original brochure with price tag is still attached. It will now travel with us on all the furture camping trips...we can't wait! Thanks Rayovac, and thanks FM for the great informative site!

ALTHOUGH THE NEW RAY O VAC LANTERNS ARE SUPERIOR IN THE SENSE...THE "L.E.D.'S" GO MUCH FARTHER ON BATTERIES AN GIVE OFF SUPERIOR LIGHT...THE QUESTION REMAINS...WILL THEY HOLD UP AS WELL AS THESE OLDER ONES? ALSO...ON THE NEW LANTERNS...THEY HAVE A BLINKIN "INDICATOR" LIGHT...THAT YOU CANT SHUT OFF...I DONT LIKE THAT...JUST USES UP BATTERY POWER FOR NOTHING.I WONT BUY A NEW ONE TILL THEY PUT A SWITCH ON IT TO TURN IT OFF OR GET RID OF THAT "FEATURE" ALTOGETHER.

I've had one of these for so long I don't know how old it is. Over the years I have broken the top, cracked the base and abused it heavily while using it at work and... it still works great. I love it so much that now, 30 years later, Im looking for another one or parts to fix mine up a bit, like a new top and base.
I dont know if my bulbs are incorrect but mine has 2-15W bulbs in it. They may be the wrong ones but they have been working in the lamp for at least 30 years. I bought it at a garage sale in the early 80s.

I have one and it is going strong after many, many years of hard use. It has been on never ending hunting and fishing trips and served well in all sorts of tough weather conditions. Truly a fabulous lantern and the envy of my hunting and fishing partners. It is a highly weather and powerful wind resistant lantern. Its tube illumination setting features are outstanding and simple to operate.. After many years of service the fluorescent tubes will need to be replaced soon. They were replaced once before. I have had difficulty finding the replacement tubes. I recently contacted Ray O Vac to see if they can supply replacement tubes.
