research shows this lantern was use for 2 primary industries, Railroad and Mining.
Battery consisted of a square or round cylinder with both positive and negative springs on the top much like the railroad lanterns use today.

Picked this one up today at a Thrift store for 2 bucks (mint). Looks like it was never used (does not look like it ever had a battery put in it). This one is odd because of the wire spool inside the clear light dome. You can pull the dome off, uncoil the wire and hang it for light. Neat lantern.
